This is something I find really interesting. And a little frustrating honestly.

Most car problems in Pakistan — not all, but most — are not sudden. They don’t just happen one day out of nowhere. They build up. Slowly. Quietly. While you’re driving to office, while you’re dropping kids to school, while you’re on the motorway at 120.

And the reason people replace parts late isn’t because they don’t care about their car. It’s because nobody told them when to replace things. So they just wait until something feels wrong. By then? The damage is usually already done to surrounding parts.

So let me just quickly go through five of the most common ones.

Air Filter. This one is almost free to replace honestly. But people leave it for years. And then the engine starts working harder than it needs to. Fuel efficiency drops. You don’t even notice but you’re filling up more often. Just replace it every 15,000 to 20,000 km. Done.

Brake Pads. Okay this one is actually a safety issue not just a maintenance issue. When brake pads wear down fully, you’re now metal on metal. That sound — that grinding sound — that’s your rotor getting damaged. A rotor is significantly more expensive than brake pads. Replace the pads before you hear that sound, not after.

Engine Oil Filter. People change the oil — good. But they reuse the old filter sometimes to save a few hundred rupees. The filter is literally designed to catch all the dirty particles. If the filter is clogged, dirty oil circulates back through the engine. Counterproductive. Change both together. Always.

Spark Plugs. This one people really ignore. Bad spark plugs mean incomplete combustion, which means worse fuel average, harder starts, rough idle. All very fixable. All very preventable.

Cabin Air Filter. Okay nobody talks about this one. But if your AC isn’t cooling like it used to — and you’ve had the gas refilled and it’s still weak — check the cabin filter. It’s often just choked with dust. Especially in cities like Karachi and Lahore. Replace it and suddenly your AC is a different machine.
